Extraordinary Nurse Recognized at Brodstone Healthcare

Superior, NE – Kayla Kimminau, RN, BSN, and Obstetrics Manager at Brodstone Healthcare was recently honored with The DAISY Award® For Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation's programs to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.

Kayla’s nomination highlighted her exceptional clinical leadership and calming presence during a delivery. The patient noted that despite several moments where the baby’s heart rate decelerated, Kayla remained a stabilizing force.

“In those instances, the atmosphere in the room could have easily shifted toward panic, but Kayla was the stabilizing force we needed,” the nomination read. “She moved with a sense of urgency and precision, yet her demeanor remained incredibly calm. She never once appeared 'freaked out,' which was instrumental in keeping my own fears at bay.”

The nomination further praised Kayla’s ability to lead and educate her peers while maintaining a compassionate connection with the family. “I watched as she confidently educated other staff members in the room, leading the experience with a clear expertise that made it obvious I was in the best possible hands. She didn't just manage the medical complications, she managed the emotional weight of the situation for me and my family.”

The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little-known but not uncommon autoimmune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.

Said Bonnie Barnes, FAAN, Doctor of Humane Letters (h.c) and Co-Founder of The DAISY Foundation, "When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night. Yet these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the superhuman work they do. The kind of work the nurses at Brodstone Healthcare are called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of The DAISY Award.”

Chief Nursing Officer Candice Thompson added, "It's such an honor to be able to recognize our extraordinary nurses and Kayla is very deserving of this recognition. She is a dedicated professional whose blend of confidence, quick action, and kindness represents the very best of nursing care. We are incredibly fortunate to have her on our team."
