Superior, NE Maddie Daly of Brodstone Healthcare was recently honored with The DAISY Award® For Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation's programs to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.

The nomination submitted read “I am nominating Maddie Daly for the DAISY award because of a recent experience I had when I was a patient in the ER at Brodstone Healthcare. I was taken to Brodstone’s Emergency Department after there was a gas leak in my home which caused me to get very sick and disoriented. Maddie was my nurse and I can’t begin to express how grateful I am for her compassionate care that I received that day and the days following. From the moment I entered the ER, she never left my side. Not only was she very engaged in the duties of her job like IV insertion, but her bedside manner, confidence in her skills, and friendly demeanor calmed me during a time of great stress. I have never been treated with such genuine care and compassion by any healthcare professional before and I’m forever grateful for her.

The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.

Said Bonnie Barnes, FAAN, Doctor of Humane Letters (h.c) and Co-Founder of The DAISY Foundation, "When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night. Yet these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human work they do. The kind of work the nurses at Brodstone Healthcare are called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of The DAISY Award.”

Chief Nursing Officer Candice Thompson added, “We are so excited to have Maddie be our very first DAISY award winner. Maddie is such a special person and nurse. Every day she has a big smile on her face and her positivity is absolutely contagious. In the last year Maddie has taken on many new challenges and grown as a nurse by training to the emergency department, OB, and charge nurse role. Brodstone Healthcare is lucky to have her and I am so pleased that the DAISY Award has provided a way for our patients and organization to highlight the amazing work Maddie and all of our nurses do here at Brodstone Healthcare.”
